How to do Photogrammetry assets for SynergyXR?

This is a short tutorial on how to do photogrammetry for the SynergyXR platform. It covers both creating and uploading content.

What is photogrammetry?

Consider photogrammetry a topological image of a certain object or environment. Basically, it is a picture with a depth map. In this way you can create a 3D model from photos. Instead of taking just one photo you are taking multiple photos of one object.

When should you use photogrammetry?

We recommend using photogrammetry whenever you want to capture a real world object and share it in VR. Of course, you could create it in 3D by handing it off to your in house graphical designer with expertise in 3D, but maybe you don’t have time to wait for that or if you have the ability your self you might just need a proof of concept faster than you can model it yourself.

Our best rule of thumb is to use photogrammetry as an “outside in” tool. Hereby meaning that photogrammetry works best, in our experience, when used to capture an element you can walk around and film from above. As opposed to for instance the LiDAR scan, when serves best as an “inside out” capturing solution for environments etc.

How to create a photogrammetry asset?

We recommend using the app “Polycam”. Read more about the app here.

For Android we recommend the app 3DSCANN, but it is . This app can be found in the play store.

If you have a professional setup with a single, or multiple DSLR-cameras, chances are you are not reading this tutorial. BUT, if you are, then we recommend Reality Capture by Capture Reality which can be found here.

The following is the workflow using Polycam:

How to upload a photogrammetry asset?

Once your asset has been exported as a GLB-file you are ready to upload using the SynergyXR manager. If you are in doubt as to how to do that, then we have a series of small tutorials on the manager right here.
